The Delhi government is set to begin admissions to its fully coeducational residential ‘sports school’, equipped with infrastructure and training facilities for 10 Olympic sports, with the aim of ‘identifying and developing talented exemplary athletes” from across the country.
This Delhi sports school will operate for grades VI to XII. It will be run by Delhi Sports University, which was established by a bill passed in the state assembly in 2019, and will be affiliated to the Delhi Board of Secondary Education of the Delhi government.
There are 10 sports for which training will be provided at the school: archery, athletics (track and field), badminton, boxing, lawn tennis, shooting, swimming, table tennis, weightlifting and wrestling.
The school was envisioned as a feeder school for Sports University to “spot and prepare sports talent from an early age to create a talent pool for Delhi Sports University”.
“Delhi Sports School will accept students from all over the country. Through this unique sports school, our government aims to identify and nurture exemplary sports talents from all over India. We will train students to become at the future of international sports champions and Olympians,” Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said.
Admissions will begin by searching for talent in various states. According to officials, applicants will first need to register on the school’s online portal, after which a shortlist of students will be prepared based on “merit”. These students will be called to talent scouting camps in their states where they will be required to undergo motor, speed, endurance and agility testing as well as testing for the sports of their choice.
The next step in the admission process will be the selection tests in Delhi, which will be followed by medical examinations of the shortlisted candidates.
Applicants for admission to Classes VIII and IX will be required to select their primary sport based on their professional performance. However, Class VI and VII applicants who have not played professionally but have “potential” may opt for one of the remaining sports.
“Students will be trained under the guidance of specialist coaches and will be continually assessed on their training and athletic performance… In addition to world-class coaching and athletic facilities, the school will have a sports science center and an athlete monitoring system to improve sport performance through scientific means… This holistic approach to creating an end-to-end sport ecosystem through sport science, infrastructure, training and a world-class program will also address the mental health issues faced by sportspeople while balancing their sports careers and the academic demands in formal education systems,” said the Vice Chancellor of Delhi Sports University , Karnam Malleshwari.
