Central Zone TT: Ronit and Snehit enter semi-finals


Ronit Bhanja (AAI) and FRS Snehit of Telangana pulled off the surprise in the quarterfinals of the men’s singles of the UTT central zone national ranking table tennis tournament on Wednesday.

As Ronit came back from 0 to 3 to turn the tide on seed Sanil Shetty (PSPB) 10-12, 9-11, 9-11, 13-11, 11-9, 11-7, 11-7 , Snehit made up for a 1-3 deficit to eliminate second seed Manav Thakkar (PSPB) 6-11, 11-6, 11-13, 3-11, 12-10, 11-8, 11-8.

Coming back to the brink, Ronit came back exceptionally well at the crucial points of Game 6. Ronit also produced some incredible forehand winners in rallies. More importantly, he didn’t give in under the pressure in the decisive game against a quality player like Sanil. Taking an 8-6 lead, he continued to put his opponent on the back foot with solid top-spin forehand shots.

Earlier, 17-year-old Lakshita Narang of Delhi made her first women’s semi-final of the season, counting Krittwika Sinha Roy of Gujarat 12-10, 11-2, 8-11, 7-11, 11-7 , 12-10.

Two players tested positive

Eighth seed Soumyajit Ghosh (Haryana) and third seed Prapti Sen of Railways tested positive for COVID-19 and had to withdraw from their quarterfinal matches.
