China withdraws from Asian table tennis championships

China has decided to withdraw its table tennis teams from the upcoming Asian Championships in Doha so that its players have a chance to prepare for their 14th National Games, the Chinese Table Tennis Association (CTTA) said on Monday.

The Asian Table Tennis Championships will be held in Doha, Qatar, from September 28 to October 5.

According to Qin Zhijian, general secretary of CTTA, after completing their quarantine on their return from the Tokyo Olympics, Chinese paddlers will return to their provincial teams for the 14th National Games, which are billed as the country’s mini-Olympic games. . , reports Xinhua. They will also prepare for the World Championships in Houston (USA) and the China Table Tennis Super League (CTTSL) thereafter.

“As the National Games table tennis competition will take place September 17-26 and the Asian Championships begin September 28, there is limited intermission between the two tournaments. Considering the international flights, it is quite difficult for the team to get to Qatar in time to participate, ”said Qin, also head coach of the Chinese men’s team.

“There is a lot of risk in international travel during the pandemic, and all participants will have to undergo quarantine after the Asian Championships, which will affect our plan for upcoming tournaments, especially the World Championships,” he said. added Qin. “This will not benefit the development of our young players, and the men’s and women’s coaching groups have made the decision to withdraw from the Asian Championships for the overall benefit of the team.”

For Li Sun, Qin’s counterpart in the women’s team, the absence of the Asian Championships will not have a big impact on the Chinese team.

“This serves as a qualification for the world team championships in Chengdu next year. We are already guaranteed a place as tournament hosts, ”Li noted.

“The first thing for players after completing their Olympic duties is to adjust their fitness to prepare for National Games and World Championships. Therefore, it is the best choice for us to withdraw from the Asian Championships, ”he added.

Qin also revealed that CTTA is planning to host CTTSL 2021 in October. “We hope that young players can get tested on this platform, and the team will look to the preparation for the World Championships from there,” he said. The world championships will take place from November 23 to 29.
