ABOU DHABI, September 25, 2021 (WAM) – Special Olympics UAE, in collaboration with Jam Sports Academy, concluded its first unified 3×3 basketball tournament today in Dubai in the presence of Minister Shamma bint Suhail Faris Al Mazrui of State in charge of youth. and President of Special Olympics UAE and Fatma Mohamed, Head of Strategy and Projects at Special Olympics UAE.
The final leg of the 3×3 unified basketball tournament took place at the private school of Al Ittihad – Jumeira, where five men’s and three women’s teams competed from the Dubai Club for People of Determination, the Al Thiqah Club for Handicapped, Heroes of Hope – Dubai and players. from Jam Sports Academy participated as unified partners.
The tournament was held to train and prepare athletes for the Berlin 2023 World Games with support from the United Arab Emirates Basketball Association, which provided referees throughout the tournament.
In addition, the Clinical Directors of the Healthy Athletes Program provided athletes with free dental check-ups throughout the tournament.
The Minister of State for Youth and President of Special Olympics UAE said: “We are proud of the success of the tournament and grateful for the instrumental support provided by the strategic partners of Special Olympics UAE. Clubs, coaches, athlete families and care and support staff, have all gone to great lengths to facilitate the return to sports programs in person, and once again, to empower our athletes, determined individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, an outlet for their passion for sport in a safe and fun environment; they are also our heroes today. ”
Today, Special Olympics UAE also signed a memorandum of understanding with Jam Sports Academy to continue to collaborate on the development of several sports programs, including handball, table tennis and tennis. The programs will introduce different sports to the UAE Special Olympics athletes and prepare them for upcoming regional and international tournaments, including the Berlin 2023 World Games.
The closing session in Dubai is the third and final stop of the Special Olympics UAE Basketball 3×3 tournament, which kicked off on September 11 at the Zayed Higher Organization for People of Determination in Abu Dhabi, followed by a second stop at the Khorfakkan Club for the Disabled in Sharjah on September 18.
The tournament saw the participation of over 100 male and female athletes from different clubs and centers for the determined people with intellectual and developmental disabilities from the United Arab Emirates.
The Berlin 2023 World Summer Games will be hosted by Germany for the very first time and will take place from June 17-24, 2023, where thousands of determined people with intellectual and developmental disabilities will come together from around the world to participate to 26 Unified sports and activities.
