“I spent two weeks with my children building…”

Formula 1 star George Russell suggested not becoming the best by copying others and cited the examples of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal to make his point. The Big Three are considered the three best players in tennis history, but they all have a completely different style of play.

Russell, who is a Mercedes teammate of all-time great F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, suggested he didn’t need to copy Hamilton to become the next all-time great. “You have probably the three greatest tennis players of all time, with three totally different approaches to their game,” Russell said on the Formula 1 Beyond the Grid podcast, as quoted by Sportskeeda.

“I think to be the best, or at least to be the best version of yourself, you shouldn’t go out and copy what the best has done. He (Hamilton) is the best because he brought out the best of itself and what makes it work for you.

In the world of tennis, who do you copy? Are you copying Nadal? Are you copying Federer? Are you copying Djokovic? Obviously, in the world of motorsport, there’s only Lewis at the moment, but this analogy made me think: “You just have to do what’s good for you”, as the made these three tennis greats.

The Big Three started the 2022 season tied with 20 Grand Slams each. Seven months into the season, Nadal now holds a record of 22 Grand Slams, while Djokovic follows with 21 Grand Slams. Federer, who has not played since Wimbledon 2021, is now third with his 20 Grand Slams.

Even without Federer, the Big Three still dominate at Grand Slam level in 2022. Nadal is expected to play the US Open, while Djokovic could miss the tournament due to his vaccine stance. Federer is also not expected to play as he is expected to be back in action at the end of September in the Laver Cup.

Federer is a former world No.

During a relaxed and child-centric interview for the Swiss newspaper Coopzeitung, Roger Federer revealed the activities he likes to share with his two sons and two daughters in his spare time.

“I haven’t taught them how to play cards yet, but Uno is very popular. And during the pandemic, I spent two weeks with my children building Harry Potter’s castle with Lego. Then we installed a mini table tennis table, we also spend a lot of time together there.”
