Latest Olympics: Poland lose in first volleyball match | Buffalo sports

Kosovar Disstria Krasniqi defeated Funa Tonaki in the 48kg women’s Olympic judo final, depriving host Japan of their first Olympic gold at home and winning Kosovo’s second Olympic medal.

Krasniqi won on a throw with 20 seconds left, scoring a waza-ari and claiming a title that moved her to tears moments later.

Although Krasniqi was the seed, she was severely challenged by the 4-foot-10 Tonaki, who beat a string of tough opponents to reach the final.

Tonaki failed to clinch a gold medal in Japan’s beloved martial art. Her success would have provided a much needed jerk of positivity for a nation still feeling deeply ambivalent about these Olympics and disheartened by the scandals and coronavirus setbacks surrounding them.
