Para TT Nationals: Lloyd of Goa wins silver on debut | Goa News

Panaji: Goa lad Lloyd Fernandes advanced to the Para National Table Tennis Championships final before losing to Shubham Vadhwa of Punjab in Indore on Saturday.
Making his National Championships debut this year, Lloyd recorded a sensational winning streak in the Class 3 wheelchair category. He started with straight-set wins over opponents Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu before earning a through to the quarter-finals.
In the semis, Lloyd faced Punjab’s Shashi Kumar and had no trouble winning the clash 11-6, 11-5, 11-6.
In the final, Vadhwa proved too strong and Lloyd lost in straight sets 4-11, 6-11, 5-11.
Lloyd, 34, had a motorcycle accident in Panaji five years ago and was bedridden for ten months. He has since been in a wheelchair.
While in high school, Lloyd was part of the champion team with Dhempe HSS, Miramar.
The Goa Table Tennis Association has delegated an eight-member team to compete in the National Championships through its Para TT committee.
“Some of the other players had some good wins with Lloyd being the standout player. It is an incredible achievement of courage and determination on the part of Lloyd, coached by Selvyn Godinho,” GTTA said in a statement.
Prior to the departure of the team, former state champion Ajit Ghantker and Pinnacle Academy, the center of Margao, organized some advanced sessions to prepare the para table tennis players.
