Ping-pong: VTTAG pays tribute to the former national champion

The Veterans Table Tennis Association (VTTAG) has honored former National Table Tennis Champion Christian Aboagye for beating current top seed Derek Abrefa at the recent Homowo Table Tennis Championships.

Aboagye’s reward included a certificate, table tennis balls, equipment case, rackets and rubbers.

The 58-year-old chief inspector and 2001/2002 national champion beat Abrefa 2-1 in the preliminaries of the Homowo tournament held at DG Hathiramani Hall three weeks ago.

In a brief ceremony held at the Seven Grand Princes Academy at Dansoman in Accra last Saturday, VTTAG President Mr. Christopher King noted that the honor was in recognition of the splendid exhibition organized by the former member of the Black Loopers and the 2001 SWAG Award Winner.

“We also want to take the opportunity to tell the public that veteran table tennis players are still able to rub shoulders with the current generation of players, so they should not be overlooked,” he said.

Role of veteran players
Mr King recalled that at the just-concluded Birmingham Games, the gold and silver medals went to two veterans who played the game for more than three decades.

“Table tennis is a sport that has no age and regardless of age and condition. As far as his hands and his mind can, he can do wonders and be on top of the world,” he noted.

He therefore called on the government to invest in sport to create jobs for young people and make them future world champions.

Chief Inspector Aboagye thanked VTTAG for the honor and pledged to keep playing and passing on his skills to youngsters to produce future national champions.

“Table tennis is a sport that should never be underestimated and it will once again become the number one sport in the country as in the past with the support of the government and other stakeholders,” he said.
