Sanija and Rajinikanth become chess champions


Yesterday Sanija Galkotuwa from Dharmaraja College and Rajinikanth Rithikasamy from Singing Fish Chess Club won the Sri Lanka National Fast Online Chess Championship (Novice Division).

Sanija along with four other players scored 6 points out of 7 games but with the best tiebreaker Sanija won first place to win the central region championship. Deeptha Ekanayake (Dharmaraja College) and Dumindu Edirisinghe (St. Anthony’s College), were respectively second and third thanks to the same tiebreaker with 6 points.

Sanija defeated Sujeewa Kirimetiyawa, Niketha Karunananda, Shahrook Fairooz and LSD Chandrasiri and Sudhan Pragatheesh and drew with Hansana Godagampala and Deeptha Ekanayake to win the gold medal.

Meanwhile, in the Northern Region tournament, Rejinikanth Rithikashamy of the Singing Fish Chess Club won the title. She also won the title on the best tiebreaker after tying with 6 points with Uthayan Suvarnika of Jaffna College. Suvarnika had to settle for second place,

The top 22 female players from the Central Province Open and the top 15 female players from the Northern Women’s team will qualify for the appropriate Major Division Chess Championships to be held from the end of August 2021.
