We will consolidate Nigeria’s regional dominance, says Tikon –

With Nigeria dominating all seven events of the second ITTF West Africa Region Championships, Nigeria Table Tennis Federation president Ishaku Tikon believes the federation would consolidate that feat.

For four days, players from Nigeria, Ghana, Republic of Benin, Togo, Liberia and Ivory Coast participated in the tournament.

Nigeria won all the top medals in singles (men and women), doubles (men and women), team (men and women) and mixed doubles.

Tikon said: “I am so delighted that we were able to host the second edition of the regional tournament and with the achievement achieved by Team Nigeria is a confirmation of our efforts and we hope to consolidate on this by ensuring that the players are watched and fed to become drummers of the world.

“Nigeria, as the region’s big brother, will continue to uplift others in the hope that the region will become the hub of table tennis in the near future.”

For Tikon, the performance of Nigeria and other nations in the competition showed that the region would continue to produce top players like Quadri Aruna in the hopes that the region would become a force to be reckoned with on the continent.

He said: “I believe that with what we have started in the region, we can continue to become competitive in Africa and in the world in general.

“There is no doubt that the region will not relent in its efforts to produce world batsmen and it is expected that the tournament will be a permanent fixture on the ITTF calendar.

“I must congratulate all the players and the delegates for their understanding, and we hope that we can continue to raise the profile of the sport in the region. “

The NTTF boss praised the Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Sports Commission for being a good host as usual, while saluting the sponsors for their loyalty to the table tennis amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
